Airline Anecdotes
THE HOLIDAY Posted by Ian Fischer
In the early days of the B707 operation, Air Niugini used to run a service to Japan from Port Moresby to Kagoshima and return. Owing to the duty hours, it was necessary to deadhead a crew to Kagoshima to effect the return flight to POM.
This involved travelling (first class) to Hong Kong on our B707, overnighting there, deadheading to Taipei with Cathay Pacific (first class) and then a wretched local airline TDA to Kagoshima in an old DC9.
To our horror, we arrived in Kagoshima to learn that the 707 had chucked its guts in somewhere and the service back to POM had been cancelled.
Left stranded by our erstwhile crew scheduling department - a common occurrence in those early days our local PX manager Butch proceeded to throw vast amounts of cash at us whilst we sampled much sakč at our adopted Japanese bar whilst seeing the sights of Kagoshima.
After three days of this, we were "rediscovered" by PX crewing who instructed us to get back to Moresby post haste. Logistically this became a nightmare as connecting back to our weekly HKG - POM service was not possible.
Left to our own devices "to get home", we learnt that a North West Orient B747 cargo flight was due in to Okinawa during the wee hours of the morning.
Jagging an Al Nippon flight down to that island, we were entertained at yet another local bar before getting to the airport and bumming a lift on this dreadful old and disgusting aircraft down to Manila with the aim of getting on our weekly MNL - POM flight due in a few days time.
Again, we were inundated with cash from the local PX office and spent many a fond hour in the notorious Spiders Web Bar whereupon we fell madly in love with the "girls" and I even think the F/O proposed to one and offered to get her an Aussie passport as proof of his love!!!
Eventually we did connect with out 707 service from Manila back to POM and after an incredible TEN (10) days away did not even log one single hour of stick time, spent huge amounts of money, had a great tour all round Asia and the next day were deadheaded to Sydney (first class) to pick up a flight SYD - BNE - POM.
Them was the days!
