ANECDOTES FROM THE B707 DURING THE EARLY EIGHTY’S Posted by Ken Wake

Delay In Manila

PNG residents are well known for their support of rugby league and there's usually a large contingent headed for Hong Kong each year for the world famous rugby sevens.  One particular year in the early eighty’s I was the captain bringing the noisy buggers home to POM via Manila.  While on the ground Manila the aircraft became unserviceable and so I had to inform the passengers of the delay.  I stood on a chair and told them the grim news that we would have to overnight and leave at 10 am next day.  I was greeted with a mighty cheer and they started yelling for two nights delay.  Wish all passengers were like them when we had delays.

A Flight to Sydney

Once again back in the early eighty’s I was crew on a flight to Sydney.  On board in first class were the Prime Minister Mr Somare and our good doctor Jim Jacobi.  The prime minister was going to Australia to negotiate some financial aid from the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, and Dr. Jacobi was going to Australia to consult a doctor regarding his medical problems.  I went back to talk to them while they were enjoying the PX hospitality with some good food and red wine.  Mr. Somare informed me that he didn't think Jim was a very good doctor because he was going to Australia to see another doctor, and Jim replied that he didn't think Mr. Somare was a very good Prime Minister because he was going to Australia to see another Prime Minister.  Mr. Somare loved the joke and laughed uproariously.
